Band of Toughs

a theatre Collaboratory

Nirvamlet, mixes 90s grunge and Shakespeare’s Hamlet, in a rocktail of icons and heart-shaped depression, with a splash of conspiracy and murder.

A bit of background to help you orient…

On a dark night, a ghost walks the ramparts of Elsinore Castle in Denmark. The ghost bears a striking resemblance to the recently deceased King Hamlet, whose brother Claudius has inherited the throne and married the king’s widow, Queen Gertrude.

The ghost appears to Prince Hamlet, the son of Gertrude and the dead king, declaring ominously that it is indeed his father’s spirit, and that he was murdered by none other than Claudius. He orders Hamlet to seek revenge on the man who killed him.

Nirvana Refresh

Grunge is a genre of rock music and subculture. By the early 1990s, its popularity spread, in part, due to bands such as Nirvana, fronted by Kurt Cobain, and Courtney Loves’ band, Hole.

Nirvana was considered the "flagship band of Generation X" and Cobain found himself reluctantly anointed by the media as the generation's "spokesman." He struggled with the pressures of fame and his marriage to Love. On April 8, 1994, Cobain was found dead at his Seattle home from what police concluded was a self-inflicted shotgun wound to his head.
